For my frame that would be the 1 3/8", I think.

I also found that Grainger seems to carry some of these. Indeed it wasnt clear to me that I would be able to service mine the way that you can service the genuine S&S item. If you are ordering some better quality retaining rings, please let people know with another post. titaniumbikerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02120734429785471984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8457759433255973831.post-30265350805098961432020-10-25T19:11:01.831-07:002020-10-25T19:11:01.831-07:00Hi CT -- I'm so glad this post helped you navi...Hi CT -- I'm so glad this post helped you navigate the process and that you're loving the resulting bike. Yes, I seem to remember that initial creaking was much better (maybe solved) when I did a thorough cleaning of the frame so there wasn't any more grit in the coupler threads. There was a lot of blast debris in mine too.

I am using the fluo grease. I tried different greases, but I think the cleaning and then proper torquing (and getting the right wrench) were the solution for me. Granted, that frame has been idle for awhile, as no recent travel. I'm using the twin frame w/o couplers as my go-to bike for road or gravel. (Just did a gravel ride on it today.)

One thing I did learn later is that the Waltly coupler rings corrode; they are not stainless steel. I helped a friend build a frame and he's been riding it regularly and he had a ring completely corrode and the coupler separate. Luckily he was stopped! Check the state of your coupler rings.

There are better quality (stainless steel) rings available from https://www.smalley.com/retaining-rings/spirolox -- I have not yet found a distributor that can help me circumvent the $160 minimum order when ordering direct from them. I may just bite the bullet and order a whole bunch of rings in the two main Waltly tube sizes and then offer them as replacements at cost to others to eventually offset the costs of the bulk order.Hanshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17473998616519034255noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8457759433255973831.post-2758480178986378242020-10-24T20:11:47.105-07:002020-10-24T20:11:47.105-07:00Great article. Curious, what grease did you end up using with the couplers?

I’m getting creaking as well. I’m using the finish line fluro grease recommended by S&S. When I got the frame the couplers had a lot of blast debris around the couplers. I cleaned them the best I could and greased them. I’m thinking of removing the retainer rings and clean them that way with some WD40 and isopropyl alcohol.

Otherwise I love the bike and it’s become the go to bike riding single track, road, and gravel.
